Houston Local Info Houston is well-known for its broad support of professional team sports. What is less known is that this city also loves its individual sports. As one of the powerhouse sports for the individual athlete, golf is adored in Houston . With dozens of courses scattered throughout the city, this should come as no surprise. The Professional Golfers' Association of America, better known as PGA, plans some of the most competitive tournaments in golf. One of the stops on the PGA tour is right here in Houston , at the Shell Houston Open.The Shell Houston Open is hosted by The Houston Golf Association. This group has been planning events in Houston for the PGA tour for almost 60 years, which makes this tournament one of the oldest. It occurs in April of each year. The Houston Open has been held on more than ten different courses, including Quail Valley Country Club, The Woodlands Country Club, and TPC Woodlands. It will be held at Redstone Golf Club in 2004, for the second consecutive year. In 2005, it is scheduled to be played at a new course that is currently under construction.  Redstone Golf Club is located approximately 15 miles north of downtown, near the intersection of Highway 59 and Beltway 8. The course was designed by Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy and is 72-par, with a maximum length of 7,500 yards. This facility also houses a driving range, putting areas, a chipping green, and an impressive clubhouse. The clubhouse offers two dining areas, two golf shops, comfortable locker rooms, an expansive Members Only area, and an elegant outdoor terrace. What better way to unwind after your game than with a cocktail on the patio?If you want to try your hand at the courses the pros have played, you will find that many of them are conveniently located near downtown Houston . The Woodlands County Club is located north of Houston , just off of Highway 45, in The Woodlands, Texas. TPC Woodlands is also located in this area. Quail Valley Country Club can be found in Missouri City, Texas, a suburb of Houston that is southwest of downtown, just outside of Beltway 8. Whether you want to catch some PGA action or just play some challenging courses, you will be thrilled with your options.
